Do you know how popular podcasts are?

Annabel Kaye

More than 50 thousand podcasts are hosted in the UK and the figures worldwide run into millions. Almost everyone has heard a podcast and many of us have regular favourites we return to. It’s a growing medium for businesses to engage with and educate customers.

Personally, I think audio only is always going to go from strength to strength as we can listen without having to look, so it is safe whilst driving, walking, running off road or commuting!

Have you thought about offering services to support podcasts?

If someone is new to podcasting they often value support in choosing a podcast platform and getting set up.

Further down the line they may value episode editing and uploading.

All these stages involve the creation of graphics and at work. It’s not just about technical editing skills. There is also support on chasing up guests for their bios, artwork and more.

From a marketing and social media point of view, there is a need to publicise the podcast and to audit whether the podcast is meeting its target audience. And there are PR opportunities too. The list is long.

I am sure you can think of many more things if you sit down and think about what you do and how you can help.

What services can you offer to podcasters?

It’s always good to check opportunities to find new customers. There’s a lot of work behind a successful podcast. And where there’s work there are always people able to help you.

Producing and supporting podcasters is a lot of work and many specialist podcast supporters are springing up. Either helping with set up or regular production and uploading. It’s a great thing for freelancers with tech skills, video and audio editing skills and graphic design skills to get into.

Are you a podcaster?

Sometimes the need to do regular interviews or stick to publishing cycles can get on top of you. Are you doing it all yourself? What type of support are you getting? What would make your life easier?

You don’t always need an audio technician. Sometimes administration help – getting all those guests lined up and all those details ready for the episode graphics. Or it could be producing the graphics, or editing and uploading the episodes.

Who owns the rights to podcasts?

Have you ever thought about who owns the rights to your podcast content? If you are the podcast host you may assume it is automatically yours. But the reality is much more nuanced than that even when it comes to the people you pay, never mind your guests.

You don’t automatically own the copyright to guest recordings, or the artwork or anything else. Those rights remain with the person creating that content (unless they are your employee) unless and until a contract or agreement moves those rights from them to you.

That may seem like an abstract concept, but if you want to monetize your podcast or even sell it as successful podcasters have been known to do, you are going to run into difficulties. Your back catalogue is not worth much if you don’t own it.

AI-ready podcast contracts are needed

Everyone is using AI assistance at some point in the production cycle. This can be a great aid to productivity. You may be using AI yourself, or your team may be.

Have you ever thought about who owns the copyright in AI created content? How much do you have to ‘edit’ it to make it your copyright? What if your team are using it and you don’t know?

We’ve been talking for a while about how you need to sort this out. But you really do need to get your contracts sorted out so that you know where AI is being used, what rights you have, and what rights are being transferred to you.

Do you need an additional podcast contract?

If you are an existing KoffeeKlatch terms customer with AI ready terms (currently VA and Social Media) with the blue flash at the top of the pack (see below) you don’t need to purchase a whole new contract.

You just need to purchase an add on to extend your range. Add ons start at £10 plus VAT so they represent excellent value for money. This allows you to experiment with one or two clients in a new niche without worrying about the cost.

Just log in to the store using the email you used to purchase your original contract and you can purchase the add on to extend your contracts.

The growing range of add ons include

Not yet got an AI ready KoffeeKlatch contract?

People often ask us, “Which base contract should I use when I do more than one thing?”

If you are new to KoffeeKlatch the way to decide is to work out what you plan to do the most – what is going to be the main string to your bow.

If you plan to specialise in podcasts from the start, then purchase the podcast contracts from the main range above. You can always add on social media (if you are going to do that too) or even choose the VA add-on later.

If you are going to do mostly social media and are just starting podcast support, then choose the social media terms and add on the podcast.

If you are a VA and you are going to be doing a bit of podcast support or a bit of social media then start with the VA terms and then add on what you need.

Add ons are available at the cart or post purchase. So you don’t have to get everything you might need if you are not sure. Just figure out where you are going to start.

Now you can have contract protection for a new niche without the expense of a whole new contract – so you are free to experiment.

Already have VA or Social Media AI ready contracts?

If you are already a KoffeeKlatch customer using the AI ready VA or Social Media range then all you need to do is log into the store and purchase the add on. Your contracts are designed to work across all three.

The same principle applies to the team hiring contracts where there are equivalent add ons.
